While the majority of the world shelters in place, truck drivers continue to work around the clock to ensure much-needed supplies are delivered. The 3.5 million truck drivers in our country are unsung heroes, and in order to keep them healthy and safe during these uncertain times SmartDrive compiled a list of nine tips for drivers.
- Disinfect: Start your day by disinfecting both the interior driver space and the frequently touched exterior surfaces around your vehicle
- Be Conscientious: Before scheduling a delivery, ask about any illness in the home or at the dock
- Wash Your Hands: To keep your hands clean, wash them frequently in hot water for at least 20 seconds, especially when leaving public areas
- Practice Social Distancing: Do your best to stay 6 ft—about the length of a truck tire—away from others
- Be Transparent: Immediately contact your dispatcher if you feel sick so that alternate plans can be made. Then report to medical professionals
- Plan Meals: In order to avoid going into restaurants and truck stops, keep several meals on-hand. If you do have to pick up food, find a restaurant that provides an app for ordering and purchasing food directly from your phone to minimize interactions
- Sanitize: Keep hand sanitizer nearby for times you encounter a public surface and can’t wash your hands
- Avoid Hand-to-hand Contact: For deliveries and pick-ups, avoid direct contact. If possible, pick up and drop off deliveries on a surface that prevents hand-to-hand contact
- Repeat Tip #1: End your day as you began it—disinfect!
