NEW DUMP PUMP ENTERS SMALL FRAME TRUCK MARKET

DUMP PUMP

Since the 1970s, the dump truck industry has been relegated to two sizes of dump pumps: a larger, higher flowing (up to 48 gpm at 1800 rpm) C Series pump, and a smaller, lower flowing (up to 29 gpm at 1800 rpm) G Series pump. The smaller size of the G Series pump is ideal for trucks with automatic transmissions, while the C Series pump is designed for trucks with manual transmissions. New drivers in the truck market are less familiar with manual transmissions, creating a need for more automatics. However, using the G Series pump means slower dump cycles for trucks outfitted with automatic transmissions when compared to their manual counterparts. Slower dump cycles mean less material is transported and more time is spent on-site, which can cut into profits.

WHAT’S THE CAUSE?

All direct mount dump pumps are connected to a power take-off unit (PTO), which is mounted to the truck’s transmission. The PTO draws power from the transmission and allocates it to the dump pump. The truck’s transmission is nestled between the frame rails of the truck chassis. On trucks with manual transmissions, the PTO and dump pump are mounted using an opening on the bottom of the transmission. However, on trucks with automatic transmissions, a PTO mount on the bottom side does not exist.

Automatic transmissions typically have PTO mounts on their side with limited space between the frame rails for installation. This design creates a space problem. The large C Series cannot fit between the side mounting and the frame rails. To fix this problem, a smaller dump pump (G Series) was designed to fit in the limited space. The G Series dump pump produces less flow with a smaller valve body, solving the space constraint issue, but resulting in a slower overall dump cycle time.

OPERATION

In larger pumps, such as the C Series dump pump, there is adequate space for a valve body that can accommodate a larger amount of flow. Smaller pumps, such as the G Series dump pump, have less room for the valve body resulting in a smaller amount of flow that can return from the cylinder. The C Series achieves 48 gpm, whereas the G Series only achieves 29 gpm. The lower pump flow along with a smaller core in the valve body results in slower lowering of the dump bed. Thus, the flow in the valve body directly impacts the dump cycle times of a dump pump.

GAME-CHANGER

To close the gap between automatic and manual dump cycles, Parker’s Pump & Motor Division launched a new dump pump that combines the best of both designs into one: a Commercial-branded, midsize pump with a larger, integrated dump valve that can be mounted to automatic transmissions. As a high-flowing pump with a smaller footprint, the new pump was deemed the Super G (SG102). 

An SG Series dump pump achieves 38 gpm at 1800 rpm. This allows the SG102 Series to provide a 37% faster dump cycle than the G102 Series 2-inch dump pump. The SG102 Series also has a displacement of 4.93 cubic inches per revolution, which is 1 cubic inch per revolution bigger than the G Series and 2 cubic inches per revolution smaller than the C Series. This allows for the SG to obtain 25% more flow than a G Series dump pump, while still 20% lighter than the C102 Series 2.5-inch dump pump. The dump truck industry will benefit from the improved power density and a safer process due to the quicker cycle time for the bed to return prior to the operator moving from the jobsite location.

Like the traditional dump pumps (C Series and G Series), the SG Series has a cast iron body for excellent power to weight ratio. Unlike the traditional dump pumps, the SG Series is a bushing pump rather than a bearing pump. This is a design upgrade as a bushing pump spins faster than a bearing pump allowing greater flow.

SERVING ALL

The SG Series is available in clockwise and counterclockwise rotations with flanges and shafts available in both SAE and DIN configurations to serve all dump truck manufacturers and operators. Along with the integrated relief, load hold, and raise/neutral/lower valves, there are both manual and air shift valve options readily available to aid in all dump pump applications.

For ideal performance, Parker recommends pairing the Super G with the 280 Series PTO and SG102 Series pump support brackets from Parker Chelsea.
