NAVISTAR ANALYTICS TEAM SELECTED AS WINNER OF THE FIRST ANALYTICS 50 AWARDS
Navistar announces that it is honored to be among the winners of the first-ever Analytics 50 Awards. Drexel University and CIO.com announced the winners of the awards program, and Navistar’s Analytics team, represented by Dan Pikelny, vice president, Analytics, was named as one of the honorees. The goal of the Analytics 50 Awards program is to honor 50 companies using analytics to solve business challenges.
“We are committed to providing our customers with the best trucks and buses in the industry and as such, we employ comprehensive data analysis to help our customers optimize their fleet maintenance and uptime,” says Phil Christman, senior vice president, Joint Strategic Operations and Planning, Navistar. “We’re proud of Dan and the Analytics team for achieving this honor precisely for their work to help customers proactively manage their fleets by detecting major issues four to six months earlier using our predictive model.”
To be nominated for the award, Navistar described how it came up with an analytics-based solution to address a current business challenge. The Analytics team has developed algorithms to predict the lifetime failure rate and sets alerts on future risk, instead of focusing on historical experience, which means they are helping fleet managers to detect problems and prepare accordingly.
“Navistar needs to be able to support our trucks while they are out in the field,” says Dan Pikelny, vice president, Analytics, Navistar. “And, from an analytics perspective, our challenge is detecting problems in the vehicle before customers experience issues in the field. Our OnCommand™ Connection remote diagnostics system has given us the ability to predict which vehicles are at risk and which components are potentially problematic.”
The Analytics 50 honored leaders from a wide range of industries—including manufacturing, software, pharmaceutical, health care, government, financial services, and others. By identifying leaders in analytics, the program aims to share best practices and recognize innovation. CURT ENGINEERING IMPLEMENTS “REAL TOWING” TEST WITH MULTI-FACETED CARLOS TC TESTING
CURT Manufacturing, the leading manufacturer of USA-made towing products, has developed new testing capabilities at its engineering facility in Wixom, Michigan. This multi-faceted, three-axis, real-time test allows CURT to prove the safety of its hitches like never before and is setting a new standard in the towing industry in North America.
Based on testing developed by European manufacturers called the Carlos TC (Car Loading Standard, Trailer Coupling), this new test is designed to simulate towing in the real world. It does this using three actuators and varying loads. While many tests today apply load pressure up and down, CURT is able to simulate actual driving conditions by pushing, pulling, lifting, and pressing at the coupling point. These forces are applied in varying combinations and degrees, to mimic the behavior of a real trailer in tow.
CURT prides itself on paving the way in the towing industry with new innovations and the most advanced technology. This includes testing. Currently, it is working with some of its OE customers, as well as a competitor, to develop its new testing capability into an industry-wide standard for North America. Robert Krouse, director of R&D, Testing, and Wixom Engineering, states, “It is important that we are testing our products to the state-of-the-art, and the Carlos TC test and our latest North American industry work are important steps in furthering that goal.”

STERTIL-KONI ENCOURAGES PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP AND CONGRESS TO IMPLEMENT US INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORTATION UPGRADES
Heavy-duty lift leader, Stertil-Koni, has called on the incoming administration headed by President-elect Donald Trump to focus on upgrading US infrastructure and transportation in the upcoming term, beginning January 2017. Further, Stertil-Koni urges members of Congress to support public and private investments—and related incentives—to advance public works programs that will create better roads, transportation systems, bridges, and jobs for American workers.
The need is pressing. Here’s why: The American Society of Civil Engineers recently gave America a “D+” rating in terms of infrastructure, citing dilapidated roadways, insufficient waterways, and “a pressing need for modernization.”
The group estimates $3.6 trillion would need to be invested into US infrastructure by 2020, just to raise the country’s support systems to acceptable levels. A 2015 American Public Transportation Association/Mineta Transportation Institute study found that 75 percent of Americans support increased spending on public transit infrastructure. The initial plan from President-elect Trump’s 10-year infrastructure proposal will cost $1 trillion, but according to a November 11, 2016, Wall Street Journal article, the President-elect hasn’t specified the source of the funds.
That said, the President-elect has vowed that his infrastructure proposal will create “millions” of jobs, likening it to Dwight Eisenhower’s creation of the interstate highway system. Stertil-Koni president, Dr. Jean DellAmore, notes, “The stakes are indeed high, but overall if the program is implemented, it will result in a big win for American business and American workers. The reason is clear: It will spur jobs and manufacturing in multiple regions of the country, including the Rustbelt.”
